    Finished Flying Spaghetti Monster Hat

These two photos are by my husband, Gabriel Cain. On my Flickr account used strictly for knitting, you can find a few pictures of it in process, as badly shot by me, as well. I’m the nature photographer, Gabriel is the lighting guru.

The hat started out as a basic earflap cap with i-cord ties, made from Blue Sky Alpaca’s natural color Organic Cotton in color 80, Bone.

The noodly appendages are different lengths of i-cord of the same yarn, attached at only a few points, so that they can be rearranged.

The meatballs are handmade pom-poms of Lamb’s Pride Worsted in color M89, Roasted Coffee.

The eye stalks are the Blue Sky cotton finished with white Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn. The pupils are (badly) embroidered black Sugar’n Cream.

Everything was knit on size 7 needles. The body of the hat used Knitpicks Options nickel needles. The i-cord, earflaps, and eyestalks were all done on bamboo double-pointed needles.

If you are tempted to ask me to make you one of these, please be aware that I am personally sick of this particular project.  Making yards of i-cord sucks.

I’m going to attempt a second prototype with a few changes, which I will try to track and write down what I’m doing. We shall see if it actually works.

I would LOVE to have one of those. If you’re ever interested in selling them, PLEASE let me know.

      So brilliant!

The biggest thing about selling (or rather having commissioned) one of these is that it’s a huge time sink on my part. I can get less expensive materials than the ones used in this, but my time is still necessary.

The other problem with selling these things is that the originator of the Flying Spaghetti Monster is not cool with it. From the FAQ : “It’s ok with me if you’re using the FSM images/content as long as it’s not for profit, and you’re doing it to further the Cause of the church… Making FSM t-shirts, selling FSM merchandise, etc. is NOT OK.” Perhaps that’s too bad, but I think it’d seem a little unfriendly to go against his wishes.

I do love this hat. To my mind, it’s the pom-poms that really make it.

Oh, I’m very well aware of that, Cam. I was just sharing my personal biggest reason why I wouldn’t be able to sell them, not my only one. :)
